Sensitive, reliable and capable of extreme service, the FT-1AP is the recommended monitor/ receiver for stations whose ratings are pegged as much to audio quality as content, or where there is a demonstrable need for accurate off-air sampling in real time. Referred to by many as approaching CD-quality audio reproduction, such a capability not only assists station in establishing audio excellence for your audience, it can also assist the CE in spotting equipment malfunction in the processing chain.

Since its introduction the FT1AP has been touted by some as "the ultimate translator receiver" for difficult translator/repeater work. Highly reliable in unmanned settings, the FT-1AP's solid rf sensitivity and selectivity can be expected to maintain your translator/repeater incoming reception at maximum efficiency .... this even under high rf saturation, narrow frequency offset or in a deep fringe location. This is a result of the FT-1AP's high level of rf sensitivity (30uv for 50dB quieting in stereo), and first and second adjacent rejection (25dB and 80dB respectively).

According to those using the FT-1AP as a monitor/receiver for remote broadcasting, the FT-1AP's remarkable sensitivity has often brought a fully listenable, station signal into venues where even car radios have failed. Such a capability has proven invaluable to both the remote engineer and on-air talent, providing incentive for the highest program quality.

Whether it is in the station rack, as a remote monitor, or as a remote demodulating receiver at a translator/repeater site, the FT-1AP's sturdiness, high rf performance capabilities and its ever-present CD-like audio clarity make it the receiver to beat. This is especially valuable when these characteristics are important to maintaining the radio station's support and its listener base through repeater/translator chains. Not only that, the FT-1AP has the elegance and functionality to be installed as a component in any high resolution, audiophile system. This allows station personnel the opportunity to monitor the station signal from the comfort of their own home.

The Fanfare FT-1AP is likely the most sensitive, professional monitor/receiver on the market today. Combine that with its excellent adjacent rejection capability and high-reliability circuit design and you have a receiver that can hack it, unattended, in just about any climate, rf or otherwise.

Under the Hood

FT-1AP is analog. However, tuning accuracy is maintained by a computer-driven PLL circuit. This negates drift during warmup, or during sudden voltage anomalies. For initial tuning, the FT-1AP's 'Uniset' processor sends a dead-accurate tuning voltage to the tuning varactors immediately the unit is turned on. Should there be any change in tuned frequency compared with the actual frequency counter, an error signal is generated at the PLL and the Local Oscillator brings the monitor to the correct frequency. Tuning is updated continuously, thereby avoiding any drift whatsoever.

Composite Output is available via BNC on the rear panel. Level is set via the control right above the output connector. The Composite Output remains live* at all times while the unit is connected to a live powers source.
*With "Carrier Sense" invoked, the Composite Output is then under the control state of the Carrier Sense circuit.

Agile tuning is quickly accomplished via 'up/down' pushbuttons on the front panel. Local stations may also be scanned via 'up/down' buttons that tune to the next station, up or down, that is being received at 50dB+ quieting in either stereo or mono. Up to 8 stations can be programmed as presets. Control buttons are recessed for safety or security reasons. Wide and Narrow IF band switching is available, with the Narrow IF band being especially effective in dealing with intrusive first and second adjacents. This is accomplished with no noticeable restriction of the audio bandpass.

All front panel controls are mirrored on an optional IR remote control. If ordered in basic form, the FT1AP arrives ready to accept the RS-232 serial "Data Input/Output", the Carrier Sense system, and the IR remote control. Retrofit can be easily carried out on site.

At the heart of the FT-1AP's state-of-the art "UNISET" control system is a replaceable, firmware chip. This modern innovation assists the receiver's operation by providing the necessary parameters for the digital control system. It also allows the flexibility of field updates or upgrades to the control system at any time without having to return the unit to the factory.

Power interruption is not a problem for the FT-1AP. If a failure should occur, its battery-backed microprocessor circuit returns tuning to the exact same settings that were in play at the time of power failure. The power receptacle, which is fused at 0.5A, accepts an ISE modular power cord. The FT-1A meets or exceeds the standards as established by CSA, UL and complies with European CE requirements. All boards are directly replaceable and do not require in-service alignment.

NEW - Adjustable-threshold Carrier Sense" provides FCC compliance assurance -
All MK II Fanfare translator receivers are now more adaptable to translate sites where adjacent and/or co-channel interference may rise to 50dB above noise. Available "Carrier Sense" firmware for both the FT-1AP and the FTA-100P provides incremental threshold setting, thereby allowing Carrier Sense to be set to trigger when carrier drops below preset value of 10, 20, 30, 40 or 50dB.

The opportunity to maintain FCC-compliance with 47 CFR 74.1234(a)(2) is provided by shutting down both the Composite Out and the Audio Out whenever Carrier Sense has been triggered by loss of signal. A 12VDC utility voltage also appears on the rear panel . The latter can be used to activate a circuit to take the exciter off line to totally eliminate "dead air".

Note: The Carrier Sense upgrade is accessed via the front panel controls and may be set by IP remote control through the RS-232 serial data I/O.

A note to CE's re "interns": The FT-1A was built sturdy so it can survive "road-case" fatigue and the many other unseen indifferences, as might be experienced in any remote monitoring situation. With nothing near it in terms of sturdiness, performance and price, the FT-1AP is easily the most cost-effective tuner/monitor/demod for 'difficult translates' on the market today.
